Frequently asked questions about Project P.L.A.Y. School
What is mixed age grouping and why is it important?
Mixed age grouping creates an atmosphere of nurturing and allows each
child to learn at their own pace. Learning is a continuum and teachers
support the individual and his or her learning needs. At our school, the
group is a family of learners.
How do teachers interact with children at Project P.L.A.Y. School?
Teachers participate as partners in children’s activities with positive
interactions focusing on each one’s strengths. Forming positive relationships, supporting ideas and demonstrating a problem solving approach to social conflict
is vital to our philosophy.
How is the day organized at Project P.L.A.Y. School?
We provide blocks of time for child-initiated activities interspersed with
more structured group activities such as small group work, story and snack
times. The flow of our day allows for flexibility so that activities that may need more time can be accommodated.
Why do we use natural materials and recycled, found objects at Project P.L.A.Y. School?
Exploring natural, beautiful and interesting objects stimulates creativity and fills the environment with life for the children. Having open-ended materials allows each child’s work to be uniquely their own.
How are parents, teachers, and children partners in the learning process at Project P.L.A.Y. School?
We value listening, openness and respect in relationships with children and parents and create an environment that is welcoming. Participating with parents to help children grow and develop is a special privilege and we value parents as the child’s first teacher and a partner with us in this journey.
If my child is too young to begin school in September (younger than 2 1/2). When should I apply?
We accept applications on a rolling basis as space allows and will keep your information on file so we can plan for your enrollment.
My child will be 4 or 5 for this coming school year. Are they too old to attend?
They are a great age to join us! We are currently meeting our goals to create a mixed age group. You can read more about why we value this type of learning environment in our philosophy.
Will you offer any sibling discounts or other financial aid?
We will offer a 10% discount for the second sibling and will accept subsidy through the PA COMPASS program.
FAQ’s Specific to BOK location:
I was interested in more part-time hours than your current program options. Will you offer fewer hours?
In this inaugural year we can not offer more program options in order to meet our budget for operations. We may be able to offer more part time options as we learn the needs of the community.
With your hours as 8am-6pm, can I pick my child up earlier or drop them off later? Does our schedule have to be the same every day?
You are welcome to bring your child and pick-up as needed for your family. We have an open door policy and will always work to meet your needs.
What do you anticipate the student/teacher ratio to be?
We will exceed the state required ratios with a staff of four teachers and two teaching assistants.
Are there school breaks I need to plan for?
We are a 12 month school. We will be closed for a one-week winter break and possibly a one-week summer break. We will update the calendar and inform our community of school closings.
